Ringision and Tirrim Primary School

At Tirrim Primary School Rendille kids have the opportunity to learn about a world outside of camels, sand and sun. Christian teachers give children like Ringison (pictured) hope. Besides that they also get a meal every day, something most in her family have no guarantee of.

The Pastor above seemed to be a bit suspicious of the mzungu with the big camera standing under the tree. Mzungu being Swahili for white man, ie. me.

The board hanging in the front of the local church quotes Psalm 143:10; "Teach me to do your will, for you are my God."

New Warriors: The Camelboys

All Rendille boys are circumcised at least 28 years after their father. This makes them warriors, no matter what their age. These boys are all around 12-13 and have just become warriors. They will live in this role for the next 14 years until it is time for their marriage year. In that year the whole generation of warriors will become elders and new warriors will be circumcised to take their place.

The warriors are the army and the 'cowboys' of the tribe. Perhaps 'camelboys' would be a more accurate name as the camel is what they will herd, protect, and live off.

Just a minute

As you can see I am diving into the blog thing. Mind first.

The Rendille are nomadic camel keepers. to the average visitor they look like masai but I hope to show you that they are vastly different. My photos of the Rendille will focus on portraits (often kids) and on the unusual angle. I am eager to get feedback on how to improve my photos and the blog as a whole, so please take a min and post a comment.
